Alberta, known for its breathtaking landscapes like the iconic Canadian Rocky Mountains, is also famous for its rich natural resources, earning it the nickname "the energy province." Beyond its economic power, Alberta is known for cultural highlights such as the Calgary Stampede, one of the world's largest rodeos, and unique culinary creations like Ginger Beef.
Beyond its beauty and culture, Alberta offers strong economic prospects, supported by the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP). This program allows the province to nominate skilled workers, entrepreneurs, and graduates for permanent residence (PR) to meet Alberta’s labor and economic needs.
How does the AAIP work?
Under this program, Alberta selects individuals who have the skills, education, and work experience needed to fill shortages in the province. Once nominated by Alberta, candidates can apply to IRCC for permanent residence.
The AAIP offers several streams targeting different types of applicants, including:
1. Streams for Workers:
Participation is only by invitation, so an Expression of Interest (EOI) is needed for the chance to be invited to participate. This stream has 4 different streams:
1. Tourism and Hospitality Stream: For candidates with a full-time job offer working in the tourism and hospitality sector in Alberta.
2. Alberta Opportunity Stream (AOS): For temporary foreign workers already working full-time in Alberta in an eligible occupation.
3. Alberta Express Entry Stream: For candidates who have a valid Express Entry profile and are interested in settling in Alberta. There are 3 pathways under this stream for candidates with experience in in-demand occupations.
-
- Dedicated Health Care Pathways (Express Entry and Non-Express Entry options)
- Law Enforcement Pathway
- Accelerated Tech Pathway
4. Rural Renewal Stream: For individuals who have a job offer from an employer located in a rural Alberta community participating in the Rural Renewal program. This stream includes:
-
- The Economic Mobility Pathways Pilot
2. Streams for Entrepreneurs:
- Rural Entrepreneur Stream: For entrepreneurs looking to start or buy a business in a rural Alberta community.
- Graduate Entrepreneur Stream: For international graduates from Alberta post-secondary institutions who want to start a business or buy an existing one in the province.
- Foreign Graduate Entrepreneur Stream: For foreign-educated graduates who wish to launch an innovative business in Alberta.
- Farm Stream: For experienced farm owners/operators who want to purchase or establish a farm in Alberta.
Why choose the AAIP?
The AAIP is known for its flexibility and focus on Alberta’s real labor market needs. Candidates who receive a provincial nomination through AAIP earn 600 additional points under the Express Entry Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), greatly improving their chances of receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence.
Additionally, Alberta often targets individuals in key sectors, where skilled talent is highly valued, such as agriculture, healthcare, construction, technology, and trades.
For many international workers and graduates, the AAIP provides a pathway to settle in one of Canada’s fastest-growing provinces. With competitive job opportunities, a lower cost of living compared to other provinces, and a high quality of life, Alberta continues to be an attractive destination for immigrants.
