If you are exploring your options to immigrate to Canada, you have likely come across both the Express Entry system and Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs), like the Nova Scotia Nominee Program (NSNP).  But how do these systems interact?  And is the NSNP aligned with the federal Express Entry system?

What Is the NSNP?

The Nova Scotia Nominee Program (NSNP) allows the province of Nova Scotia to nominate individuals, who have the skills and experience needed in the province’s labour market.  It’s one of many PNPs that work in collaboration with the federal government to select immigrants based on regional priorities.

The NSNP offers several immigration streams, designed to attract skilled workers, entrepreneurs, graduates, and more.

Express Entry-Aligned Streams

Certain NSNP streams are "aligned" with the federal Express Entry system.  This means that if you are nominated through one of these streams, you will receive 600 additional Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points in your Express Entry profile!  Virtually guaranteeing you an invitation to apply (ITA) for permanent residence in the next draw.

Currently, the Express Entry-aligned streams under the NSNP include:

• Labour Market Priorities Stream:  This stream selects candidates directly from the federal Express Entry pool based on labour market needs in Nova Scotia.  The province issues Letters of Interest (LOIs) to candidates who meet specific criteria, which may change from draw to draw.
• Labour Market Priorities for Physicians Stream:  This stream targets doctors who have secured a job offer with a Nova Scotia Health Authority and are in the Express Entry pool.
• Experience Express Entry Stream:  This stream is for highly skilled individuals who have already experience in certain occupations for at least one year and want to make the province their permanent home.

To be considered for any of these Express Entry-aligned streams, you must already have a valid Express Entry profile and meet both federal and provincial eligibility requirements.

Why Does Express Entry-aligned Streams Matter?

Whether or not a provincial stream is aligned with Express Entry has important implications for:

• Processing time:  Express Entry applications are processed much faster.
• Points boost:  A nomination through an aligned stream gives you a significant 600 CRS points boost.
• Eligibility:  Some candidates may qualify only through provincial programs and not through Express Entry.
