Generally speaking, studying in Canada as an international student involves several steps, and the process may vary depending on the specific circumstances and the Canadian educational institution you choose. Here's a general guide for the most basic steps you will have to take in order to apply for a study permit in Canada:
1. Choose the right Program and Institution:
Research and choose the program and educational institution in Canada that best suits your academic and career goals. Ensure that the institution is designated by the Canadian government to host international students.
2. Check Admission Requirements:
Review the admission requirements for the chosen program. This may include academic qualifications, language proficiency (usually English or French), and any additional requirements set by the specific institution.
3. Language Proficiency Test:
Most Canadian institutions require proof of English proficiency through tests like IELTS or TOEFL. Take the required language test and achieve the minimum score set by the institution.
4. Apply for Admission:
Submit your application to the chosen institution along with all required documents. This may include academic transcripts, letters of recommendation, a statement of purpose, and proof of language proficiency.
5. Receive Letter of Acceptance (LOA):
Once your application is reviewed and accepted, the institution will issue a Letter of Acceptance. You'll need this letter for the visa application process.
6. Pay Tuition Fees:
Pay the required tuition fees to the institution. Keep the receipt as you'll need it for the visa application.
7. Have Proof of Funds
The Canadian government requires international students to prove that they have enough money to cover living expenses while studying in Canada. Starting from January 1, 2024, the minimum amount for the proof of funds is $20,635.00.
8. Apply for a Study Permit:
Once you have a Letter of Acceptance, proof of funds, a valid passport, and other supporting documents, you can apply for a study permit. During application process, you will be required to provide biometrics. Some students may also be required to undergo a medical examination.
