The Super Visa is a great option for parents and grandparents of Canadian permanent residents and citizens who want to spend extended time with their children and grandchildren in Canada.

With a Super Visa, eligible parents or grandparents can visit Canada and stay for up to five years per visit, with multiple entries for a period of up to 10 years.

Because this visa allows for longer stays than a regular visitor visa, the eligibility criteria and requirements are more extensive. Both the applicant (parent or grandparent) and their host in Canada must meet specific conditions.

Some key requirements include:

  • the host must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, at least 18 years old.

  • The host must meet or exceed the minimum necessary income.

  • The applicant's ties to your home country
  • The applicant must have valid health insurance that meets specific criteria.

Health Insurance Requirements for the Super Visa

To ensure applicants have adequate medical coverage during their stay in Canada, they must provide proof of a valid health insurance policy from either a Canadian insurance company or an approved provider outside Canada.

The health insurance policy must:

  • Be valid for at least one year from the date of entry.

  • Be paid in full or in installments with a deposit (quotes are not accepted).

  • Cover healthcare, hospitalization, and repatriation.

  • Provide a minimum coverage of $100,000.

Using a Non-Canadian Insurance Provider

If you choose an insurance provider outside Canada, you must ensure that:

  • The company is authorized by the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI) under the Insurance Companies Act to provide accident and sickness insurance.

  • It appears on OSFI’s publicly available list of federally regulated financial institutions.

  • The policy is issued in the course of its insurance business in Canada.

All policies from foreign insurers must include a statement confirming that the document was issued in the course of the company’s insurance business in Canada. The insurer (or underwriter) must be clearly identified on the proof of insurance.

As a Super Visa holder, it is essential to have valid health insurance throughout your stay in Canada. If your policy expires before you leave the country, you may need to renew or extend your coverage. Private health insurance must remain active for each entry into Canada.

Note: when you arrive at the border, be prepared to present proof of paid insurance to a border services officer.
