Becoming a Canadian Citizen is the last leg of your immigration journey in Canada. From becoming a temporary resident to a Permanent resident to becoming a Citizen it can take many years for some of us as immigrants. But once you are a PR in Canada it  can take less than 4 years to become a Canadian Citizen.

 

Eligibility Criteria to qualify for Canadian Citizenship includes:

 

ü  Must be a permanent resident in Canada- You can either apply for PR directly from your home country through the Express Entry FSW/FST pathways or can apply for PR from Canada through the CEC pathway. You can also immigrate as a temporary resident (student, worker etc.) and then make your way to become a Permanent Resident.

ü  You must file your taxes for at least 3 years before applying for Citizenship.

ü  As a permanent resident you must live in Canada for 1095 days (3 years) out of the last 5 years that preceded the signed application.

ü  If you are between the age of 18-54 years at the time of applying for citizenship you must pass a citizenship test. (pass score 15/20- test is all about the Canadas History, Sports, Arts, Literature, Politics, symbols etc). The study material will be provided to you for preparation of the test. You will be invited for the citizenship test anytime after you application is submitted to IRCC.

ü  You must be free of any criminal charges and must not be criminally inadmissible in Canda.

ü  You must provide documents proving your language skills in English or French- Proof of language can be your degree/diploma certificate in English/French or IELTS/TEF/CELPIP score.

ü  After all your documents are verified and background check completed you will be invited for an Oath of Citizenship- a citizenship certificate will be issued which can be used to apply for Canadian passport.

 

As a Canadian Citizen you can enjoy many perks such as voting rights in Canada, you can work in government offices, or join political parties and you acquire a Canadian passport which allows you to travel to 188 countries visa free or visa on arrival.

 

Fees for citizenship application: CAD630( single adult) and CAD100 (minor)
