Earlier this year, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) had announced that no new applications will be accepted for the Parents and Grandparent Program (PGP) in 2025. However, this year IRCC plans to accept up to 10,000 complete applications for sponsorship under the PGP. Since the program currently is not accepting new applications, this update applies to current applicants who submitted an interest to sponsor form and have been in the candidate pool since 2020. The applicants will be randomly selected from the pool and will be sent Invitation to Apply (ITA’s).
It is important to note that if an applicant applies at this time, they will not be receiving the ITA, since the intake is currently closed for new applications.
Family reunification has always been a critical an integral part of Canada’s immigration system. Super Visa is a great alternate to invite your parents/grandparents to Canada. Super Visa is exclusively designed for the parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents. Its primary purpose is to allow the family members to visit Canada for 5 years at a time (for applications on or after June 22, 2023), and provides for multiple entries for a period of up to 10 years.
One of the important changes to the Super Visa program made recently is that Parents and Grandparents can obtain private health insurance from insurers outside of Canada. The policy must meet the below requirements to be eligible:
- - be issued by a foreign insurance company authorized by the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI) to provide accident and sickness insurance
- - appear on OSFI’s list of federally regulated financial institutions
- - be issued under the company’s insurance business in Canada
