What is the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP)?
The Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) is a provincial immigration program that offers a pathway to Canadian permanent residency (PR) for individuals who have the skills, education, and work experience needed to contribute to Alberta’s economy. As one of Canada’s most dynamic provinces with a growing job market, Alberta welcomes skilled professionals, international graduates, and entrepreneurs through this program to help meet its labour market and economic development goals.
The AAIP was formerly known as the Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program (AINP). The program enables the Government of Alberta to nominate eligible foreign nationals for PR to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). The aim is to attract individuals who want to live and work in Alberta long-term, particularly in high-demand occupations that support the province’s economic priorities.
One of the major advantages of the AAIP is its flexibility and responsiveness to Alberta’s labour market needs. The program is tailored to ensure that immigrants who are selected have a strong chance of economic success in Alberta. Whether you are already living and working in the province or currently outside of Canada, the AAIP offers multiple streams to suit different candidate profiles.
The Alberta Advantage Immigration Program currently includes several streams for skilled workers, international graduates, and entrepreneurs. These include:
-
Alberta Opportunity Stream – for candidates already working in Alberta with a valid work permit.
-
Alberta Express Entry Stream – for individuals in the federal Express Entry pool who have strong ties to Alberta or work experience in in-demand occupations.
-
Rural Renewal and Rural Entrepreneur Streams – focused on attracting newcomers to rural Alberta communities.
-
Graduate Entrepreneur and Foreign Graduate Entrepreneur Streams – designed for entrepreneurial international graduates from Alberta or abroad.
-
Farm Stream – for experienced farmers looking to buy or start a farm in Alberta.
Each stream has its own eligibility criteria, including work experience, education, language proficiency, and sometimes a valid job offer. The nomination from Alberta significantly boosts a candidate’s chances of being invited to apply for PR.
