Applying to sponsor your spouse or partner can be a stressful process, and unfortunately, not every application gets approved. If your sponsorship application is refused, it’s important to know that you still have options.
A Real Story: Why Professional Guidance Matters
I once had a client who applied for spousal sponsorship on his own. He was confident that he had submitted all the necessary documents, but he forgot to include wedding photos as proof of his genuine relationship. IRCC later sent him an email requesting the wedding photos and gave him seven days to respond.
Unfortunately, he missed the email, and since he didn’t submit the required documents on time, his application was refused. Devastated, he reached out to me for help.
After reviewing his case, I reapplied on his behalf, presenting strong evidence of his genuine relationship and addressing the reasons for refusal. The application was approved, and he was finally able to reunite with his spouse.
This story is just one example of why attention to detail and professional guidance is crucial in immigration applications.
Why Was Your Sponsorship Application Refused?
IRCC provides a refusal letter explaining why an application was denied. Some common reasons include:
- Lack of evidence proving a genuine relationship (photos, financial records, chat history, etc)
- Incomplete forms or missing documents
- Sponsor ineligibility (e.g., past sponsorship obligations, financial issues)
- Applicant inadmissibility (criminal record, medical reasons or misrepresentation)
If your application is refused, you can either reapply with a stronger application or appeal the decision (if eligible). If your application was processed under the Family Class (outland sponsorship), you have 30 days to file an appeal with the Immigration Appeal Division (IAD). If the appeal is successful, IRCC will reopen and approve your application.
