Your Route to a Health Care Career in Alberta

Alberta is inviting healthcare professionals through the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) – Dedicated Healthcare Pathway. Occupations like nurses, physicians and social workers with Alberta Job offers are given the opportunity to apply for permanent residency by securing a provincial nomination from the province of Alberta.

What is the AAIP-Dedicated Healthcare Pathway?

The Dedicated Healthcare Pathway is a stream under the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP), Alberta’s Provincial Nominee Program (PNP). It is tailored for healthcare professionals with the skills and experience to contribute to Alberta’s healthcare system.
Prioritizing healthcare workers through the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) Dedicated Health Care Pathway. Alberta is addressing labour shortages in the healthcare sector, investing in its communities' long-term health and prosperity by strengthening Alberta’s healthcare system to ensure high-quality care for residents.

This pathway is divided into two streams:

Express Entry Stream: This is for candidates already in the Federal Express Entry pool with a profile aligning with Alberta’s labour market needs. For more information on Express Entry and PNP, visit IRCC

Non-Express Entry Stream: This is for candidates who are not in the Express Entry pool but meet the eligibility requirements for the Dedicated Healthcare Pathway.

Eligibility Requirements for the Dedicated Healthcare Pathway

To qualify for this pathway, applicants must meet specific criteria. While the exact requirements may vary, here are the general eligibility guidelines:

  1. Job Offer in Alberta: Candidates must have a valid job offer or employment contract from an Alberta employer for an eligible healthcare occupation. Eligible professions include:
    •  Physicians
    • Nurses (RNs, LPNs, NPs)
    • Paramedics
    • Physician Assistants
    • Allied health professionals (e.g., physiotherapists, occupational therapists)
    • Psychologist and Clinical Social Worker
  2. Work Experience: Applicants must have relevant work experience in their healthcare profession. This experience should align with the job offer and meet the standards required for the role in Alberta.

This may involve obtaining credentials from the relevant regulatory body in the province or accrediting your internationally obtained licence to the Canadian version.
  4. Language Proficiency: Candidates must demonstrate proficiency in English or French by providing valid language test results (e.g., IELTS, CELPIP, or TEF). The CLB levels vary based on the eligible occupation. For example, a CLB level of 5 and above is required for Nurses and Clinical Social Workers, while a CLB level of 7 is required for Health Care Aides and Nurse Orderlies
  5. Intent to Live and Work in Alberta: Applicants must demonstrate a genuine intention to settle in Alberta and contribute to the province’s healthcare system.

How to Apply

  1. Secure a Job Offer: Obtain a valid job offer from an Alberta employer in an eligible healthcare occupation.
  2. Gather Documents: Prepare the necessary documents, including proof of work experience, licensing, language test results, and your job offer.
  3. Submit an Expression of Interest: Submit a Workers EOI through the AAIP portal and follow the instructions for the Dedicated Healthcare Pathway.
  4. Receive an invitation from AAIP: If your EOI is selected, you’ll receive an invitation to submit an application for provincial nomination from Alberta, which you can use to apply for permanent residency with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

Conclusion

The AAIP-Dedicated Healthcare Pathway is a win-win for healthcare professionals and the province of Alberta. It provides a clear and efficient route for skilled workers to immigrate to Canada while addressing critical gaps in Alberta’s healthcare system.
