Single entry vs. multiple-entry visa for Canada visitor visa
Canada offers a variety for everyone to visit – ranging from mountains to breathtaking lakes and forests; from the bustling and vibrant downtown Toronto’s nightlife, to the serene small towns. A foreign national seeking to enter Canada for leisure, family reunion, or short business trips, requires a Visitor visa (temporary resident visa). It is an official document that Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) affixes in the passport. It demonstrates that the foreign national meets the requirements needed to enter Canada (note that the Canada Border Services Agency officers must also be satisfied of your purpose to visit Canada).
Single entry vs. Multiple entry visa
A single-entry visa lets a foreign national travel to Canada only one time. Below are certain instances where a foreign national may only be eligible for a single-entry visa:
- eligible for a fee-exemption and the purpose of the entry to Canada is limited (example, an official visit).
- taking part in a one-time special event in Canada.
- approved country-specific procedures or guidelines are in place.
In the majority of instances, after departing Canada, foreign nationals will require a fresh visa for re-entry into the country.
A multiple entry visa allows for multiple visits to Canada (during the visa validity), with each visit allowing a stay of up to six months. It is valid up to 10 years or one month before the passport expiration, whichever is shorter. Foreign nationals must arrive in Canada on or before the visa expiration date.
Which type of visa should I get?
Foreign nationals are not required to choose the type of visa, instead IRCC considers all visa applicants for a multiple entry visa automatically. IRCC reviews the application and issues a visa depending upon the foreign national’s situation.
Fees
As per [R296(1)] of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations (IRPR), post February 06, 2014:
- the fee to apply for a visitor visa is CAD 100 for an individual;
