Starting November 8, 2024, you must be enrolled in the designated learning institution (DLI) listed on your study permit. This means students can no longer change DLIs by just informing IRCC through their online account.
To change your DLI, you must apply for a new study permit. However, if you’re moving from primary to secondary levels, you do not need to change or apply for a new permit if your permit is still valid unless there are some conditions attached to your permit.
If you are changing DLI within primary or secondary levels, you do not need a new permit if your current one is valid, unless it has specific conditions that limit you from doing so.
For a change from secondary to post-secondary education, a new study permit is required, and vice versa.
If you’re changing DLIs at the post-secondary level, a new study permit is required.
Below are the steps you can follow to make any changes to your DLI.
If you already have an application in progress with IRCC, you would do so by submitting a new letter of acceptance and a provincial or attestation letter.
To make changes while you are in Canada
- Confirm your school is on the DLI list and not on the suspension list
- If you are in a Co-op program and you are changing to a co-op program at a different school, you must apply for a new co-op work permit.
Documents you need for the change
When you apply for your new study permit, you must include
- a letter explaining why you’re changing schools
- documents that prove that you meet the criteria in this link if you believe you meet the criteria to begin studying at the new DLI while your new application is in progress.
If your current application is already in progress, you can submit these documents via the web form.
