The expiration of a PR card doesn't mean that the status of being a Permanent Resident expired too. It is very important to note that expiry of PR card does not mean that you are no more a Permanent Resident. The PR card is like an identity document, which can be renewed endless times, provided that you meet all the necessary residency requirements.
Residency requirements means that out of the last 5 years, you must be physically resisidng in Canada for at least 730 days in the last 5 years. Time spent travelling with a Canadian spouse, on a business trip for a Canadian business, or working for a federal or provincial government office abroad can be included in the calculation, which conritbutes to the days as if your were inside Canada.
PR Card can be renewed if the expiry date of the card is within less than 9 months, or even if it has expired, while you were inside Canada. Most PR cards will have a validity of 5 years and new PR cards can only be delivered to Canadian Addressed only. If you’re outside Canada and don’t have a valid PR card, you need a Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) to return to Canada. You can only apply for a PRTD from outside Canada. If you try to return to Canada without a PR card or PRTD, you may not be able to take your flight, train, bus or boat to Canada.
