Technically, the student visa is the same as the Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) or Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA), which is issued to visitors coming to Canada. The government of Canada does not have a visa category called a “student visa”; when an application to study in Canada is approved, you get a vignette (visa) stamped on your passport, which permits you to enter Canada. The vignette is for one-time use, meaning you can't use it to re-enter Canada; you must apply for another TRV or ETA if you wish to leave Canada and return.
On the other hand, a study permit is a document given to a student with a valid study visa at the point of entry. The study permit is issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to students who will be studying at a designated learning institution (DLI). Apart from your personal information, the study permit usually includes information such as:
- Issued date
- Expiry date
- Name of institution
- Field of study
- Work conditions
In conclusion, your study permit authorizes you to study in Canada; it’s not a travel document, while your “student visa” allows you to enter Canada.
