Canada has introduced a new Education category under its Express Entry system, aiming to attract skilled professionals in the education sector. This initiative is designed to address labour shortages and strengthen the country’s education workforce by providing educators with a streamlined pathway to permanent residency (PR).

Who Can Apply?

The new Education category targets professionals in key education roles, including:

  • Elementary and secondary school teacher assistants
  • Instructors for persons with disabilities
  • Early childhood educators and assistants
  • Elementary school and kindergarten teachers
  • Secondary school teachers
  • Educational counsellors

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify under this category, applicants must:

  • Meet Express Entry Requirements: Be eligible under one of the three Express Entry-managed programs:
    • Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSW)
    • Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
    • Federal Skilled Trades Program (FST)
  • Possess Relevant Work Experience: Have at least six months of continuous, full-time (or equivalent part-time) experience in one of the designated education occupations within the past three years. Experience can be gained in Canada or abroad.
  • Meet Language Requirements: Demonstrate proficiency in English or French through a designated language test. If you are from outside Canada, CLB 7 is a required level to be eligible under Federal Skill Worker program
  • Educational Qualifications: Hold the necessary academic credentials required for the relevant profession in Canada. Usually a Bachelor’s degree in education is required if you are an educator, Secondary education i.e. 12th grade is required if you are assistant or helper to the educator
  • Credential Assessment (if applicable): If the degree is obtained outside Canada, an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) may be required.

Documents Required for Application

Applicants must prepare the following:

  • Proof of Work Experience: Employment letters, contracts, or other supporting documents confirming relevant teaching or education-related work experience.
  • Language Test Results: IELTS or CELPIP for English; TEF or TCF for French.
  • Educational Credential Assessment (ECA): Required for foreign degrees to ensure equivalency to Canadian standards.
  • Valid Passport or Travel Document: Proof of identity and nationality.
  • Proof of Funds: Demonstrating financial stability, unless applying under the Canadian Experience Class.
  • Police Clearance Certificate: To confirm a clean criminal record.(at a later stage in the process)
  • Medical Examination Report: To meet health requirements.(at a later stage in the process)

How to Apply

  1. Create an Express Entry Profile: Indicate relevant work experience in the education sector.
  2. Meet Eligibility Requirements: Ensure compliance with work experience, language, and educational criteria.
  3. Receive an ITA: If selected under category-based draws, an Invitation to Apply (ITA) will be issued.
  4. Submit PR Application: Provide required documents and pay applicable fees.
  5. Wait for Processing & Final Decision: IRCC will assess the application and provide a final decision.

This new Express Entry pathway offers skilled educators a faster and more accessible route to Canadian permanent residency. No job offer is required, making it an attractive option for qualified professionals worldwide.
