The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) is a crucial opportunity for international students in Canada to gain valuable work experience after completing their studies. The length of the PGWP determines how long a graduate can stay and work in Canada. The duration depends on the length of the study program, the level of education, and the validity of the graduate’s passport.
PGWP Duration Based on Study Program Length
-
Programs Less than 8 Months (or 900 Hours for Quebec Credentials):
-
Graduates are not eligible for a PGWP.
-
-
Programs Between 8 Months and Less Than 2 Years (or 900+ Hours for Quebec Credentials):
-
The PGWP duration will be equal to the length of the study program.
-
Example: A 10-month program may result in a 10-month PGWP.
-
-
Programs of 2 Years or More:
-
Graduates may be eligible for a PGWP of up to 3 years.
-
-
Master’s Degree Programs Less than 2 Years (Updated February 15, 2024):
-
Eligible graduates from master’s programs of at least 8 months may receive a 3-year PGWP.
-
This policy does not apply to certificate or diploma programs.
-
PGWP for Graduates with Multiple Programs
Graduates who have completed multiple eligible programs can receive a PGWP that combines the length of each program if:
-
Each program is at least 8 months (or 900 hours for Quebec credentials) in length.
-
The programs are PGWP-eligible.
Impact of Passport Expiry on PGWP Duration
Your PGWP validity cannot exceed the expiry date of your passport. If your passport expires before the full duration of your eligible PGWP:
-
You will be issued a PGWP only until the passport expiry date.
-
You may need to extend your PGWP to receive the full validity.
PGWP is a Once-in-a-Lifetime Opportunity
The PGWP is granted only once in a lifetime. If you have previously received a PGWP, you cannot apply for another one, even if you complete a new eligible study program. This makes it crucial to plan your studies and career path strategically to maximize the benefits of this work permit.
