A Visitor Visa (also called a Temporary Resident Visa) is what you need to travel to Canada for a short stay, whether it is for tourism, visiting family or friends. A Visitor Visa is an official document from the Canadian government that grants you entry and allows you to stay in the country for up to six months at a time. However, it doesn’t permit you to work or study in Canada; it simply gives you the chance to explore, connect, and experience Canada’s culture. If you're planning a trip to Canada, make sure to apply for a Visitor Visa in advance.

A Visitor Record, on the other hand, is a document that allows you to stay in Canada longer. However, it doesn’t guarantee that you can leave and re-enter Canada. If you are already in Canada and want to stay longer than the time granted on your entry stamp or visa (usually up to six months), you need to apply for a Visitor Record. Unlike a visa, which is used to enter Canada, a Visitor Record is only for those already inside the country and need more time.

Here are some important key points to keep in mind before applying for a Visitor Record:

  • You must already be in Canada – A Visitor Record is for extending your stay, not for entry into the country.

  • You must have valid visitor status – You need to apply before your current visa or authorized stay expires.

  • You must have a valid reason for extending your stay – Whether it's for tourism, family visits, or other personal reasons, you need to justify why you need more time in Canada.

  • You must demonstrate financial stability – You must show that you have enough funds to support yourself during your extended stay.

  • You must follow Canadian laws – Your application could be refused if you violate any immigration rules or conditions.

  • You must apply on time – To avoid losing your legal visitor status, it’s recommended that you apply at least 30 days before your status expires.
