If you are living in Canada as a worker or student and your TRV is about to expire, you must renew your TRV or apply for visitor record. However, visitor record will not allow you to travel internationally and re-enter to Canada. So, if you need to travel internationally and re-enter, TRV is the only solution.

If your present temporary resident status is still valid, you can request an extension of your stay. For any permit (work/study), apply at least 30 days before your existing status expires. The validity of your temporary residence status cannot exceed that of your passport. As a result, you should ensure that your passport will be valid for at least the same period as the requested period of extension.

If you are applying for the TRV within Canada and passport request is received after the application is approved, you can send your passport to the below IRCC office in Canada my mail only.
