The Alberta Opportunity Stream (AOS) is a key pathway under the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) that enables foreign workers already in Alberta to transition from temporary to permanent residence. This stream is designed for individuals who are working in the province and meet specific eligibility criteria related to employment, work permits, language proficiency, education, and work experience.
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for the Alberta Opportunity Stream, candidates must meet the following conditions:
1. Valid Temporary Resident Status and Work Authorization
- Applicants must have valid temporary resident status in Canada, which allows them to work.
- They must hold a valid work permit, which could be employer-specific (based on a Labour Market Impact Assessment - LMIA) or an Open Work Permit (OWP).
- Certain categories of temporary residents, such as those with maintained status or restoration status, are not eligible to apply under this stream.
2. Employment and Job Offer Requirements
- The applicant must be working in an eligible occupation in Alberta at the time of application submission.
- Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) holders must ensure their occupation is directly related to their field of study in Alberta.
- The occupation must align with the National Occupational Classification (NOC) and must not be on Alberta’s ineligible occupations list.
3. Language Proficiency Requirements
- Applicants working in TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3 occupations must have a minimum Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) score of 5 in English or French.
- For those in TEER 4 or 5 occupations, a CLB score of at least 4 is required.
4. Work Experience Requirements
Applicants must meet one of the following work experience conditions:
- 12 months of full-time work experience in Alberta within the last 18 months.
- 24 months of full-time work experience in Canada or abroad within the last 30 months.
This work experience must be in the same occupation as the applicant's current job at the time of application.
5. Education Requirements
- Applicants must have completed at least a high school education equivalent to the Canadian standard.
- Foreign credentials must be assessed through an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) if obtained outside Canada.
