For some international students in Canada, certain programs require hands-on experience as part of the curriculum. If work is an integral part of your program, you’ll need a Co-op Work Permit in addition to your study permit.

This permit ensures you can legally complete the work component of your studies, such as internships, practicums, or mandatory work placements. Without it, you may not be allowed to participate in this essential part of your program.

How to Apply for a Co-op Work Permit;

  • If you haven’t applied for your study permit yet
    You can apply for your co-op work permit at the same time as your study permit. Both will be issued together, and you’ll receive them upon arrival at the Port of Entry.
  • If you already have your study permit;
    You’ll need to apply online for your co-op work permit separately.

Why It Matters

Skipping this step could delay your studies, as you wouldn’t be able to complete the mandatory work portion of your program without the proper authorization. Applying early and correctly ensures a smooth academic journey in Canada.
