Many Canadian residents worry that their parents or grandparents may not be able to visit Canada because they lack sufficient personal savings. The good news is that parents and grandparents can still apply for a Super Visa even if they do not have funds themselves, as long as the child or grandchild in Canada can provide financial support.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for a Super Visa, your parents or grandparents must have a host in Canada who:

  • Is their child or grandchild

  • Is a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or registered Indian

  • Is at least 18 years old and lives in Canada

  • Meets or exceeds the Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) based on their family size

  • Signs a letter of invitation promising financial support for the duration of the visit, including:

    • A list of everyone included in the family size calculation

    • Confirmation of financial support during the visit

The child or grandchild’s spouse or common-law partner can co-sign the letter if they are also a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.

Medical Insurance Requirement

Your parents/grandparents must have private health insurance from a Canadian provider or an authorized foreign insurer. The policy must:

  • Be valid for at least one year from the date of entry

  • Be paid in full or partially with a deposit (quotes are not accepted)

  • Cover health care, hospitalization, and repatriation

  • Provide minimum coverage of $100,000

  • Be presented at the border if requested

Other Conditions

  • Applicants must be outside Canada when submitting the application

  • Applicants must take an immigration medical exam

  • Parents/Grandparents must be genuine visitors who plan to leave Canada at the end of their visit

Key Takeaway

Even if your parents/grandparents do not have sufficient funds or earnings, they can still visit Canada on a Super Visa as long as you meet the income requirement and provide financial support. This makes it possible for families to reunite in Canada without the visitors needing to fund their stay.
