Back in August 2020, IRCC introduced a public policy which allowed the visitors to apply for work permits from within CANADA. Reason behind this was to cope up with the shortage in labor market during Covid- 19 pandemic and visitors couldn’t travel back to their home countries.

To tackle these challenges IRCC allowed: -

• Visitors in Canada could apply for a work permit without having to leave the country.
• Foreign nationals who had held a work permit in the previous 12 months but who changed their status in Canada to “visitor” could apply to work legally in Canada while waiting for a decision on their new work permit application.

What is current date scenario? As of 2^nd March 1, 2025 –

As part of our greater effort to uphold the integrity of the immigration system and reorganize the number of temporary residents in Canada, IRCC has ended the temporary policy on August 28,2024, which was scheduled to expire on February 28, 2025. The IRCC is also aware that certain "bad actors" were deceiving foreign nationals into working in Canada without permission by utilizing the rules.

Applications filed before August 28, 2024, will still be processed by the IRCC in accordance with the rules.
