Canada is a top destination for international students, offering world-class education and a welcoming environment. However, when it comes to minors—children under the age of majority in their province or territory—special immigration rules apply. A study permit is typically required for minors to enroll in Canadian schools, but there are some exceptions.
When Can a Minor Study Without a Study Permit?
A minor who is already in Canada may be eligible to study without a study permit under the following circumstances:
They Have a Parent Who is a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident
-
If a minor’s parent is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, the child can attend school in Canada without the need for a study permit.
They Are a Refugee or a Refugee Claimant
-
If a minor has refugee status or is in the process of applying for refugee protection, they are exempt from requiring a study permit.
-
This exemption also applies if the minor’s parents are refugees or refugee claimants in Canada.
They Are Taking a Course of Six Months or Less
-
Minors who are enrolled in a short-term program (six months or less in duration) do not need a study permit.
-
However, if they plan to continue studying beyond six months, it is advisable to obtain a study permit before their initial program ends.
